DIANNE DAVIDSON

BREAKING ALL THE RULES Peabody's Down Under Oct. 15, 1988

by CDC

Dianne Davidson arrived a little behind schedule at Peabody's Down Under Oct. 15, but managed to find time after her sound check to speak with me about her tour and her latest release, BREAKING ALL THE RULES.

The band just arrived from Nashville, Dianne's homebase, after a concert in Toledo and they will return to Tennessee for a break before heading to Denver, Minneapolis and Seattle. Unlike other bands that travel from city to city for a year and then return home, Davidson's troupe fluctuates. It is basically co-ed, but the specific

membership changes depending on whether the band is on the East or West Coast. So one concert could be an all-female band, another an even mix and the third all male.

Despite the constant traveling and changing faces, Davidson manages to find time during her short stays in Nashville to work on new projects, often giving the guitar or bass players an idea and letting them run with it. She is responsible for writing all the lyrics and most of the song structure. She knows that "the majority of what [the band does] is me" and has only cowritten one song on this album, with the keyboardist. She doesn't "usually co-write, it's hard."

Davidson's songs are "about. personal struggle" and her music "the appeals to people because personal is the universal." Davidson is well known and respected among women's groups, and she expects audiences to be mostly However, she does not feel any special need to spread a message or be a representative of one group. She is just up there doing her thing and hopes her music speaks to a broad spectrum of people.

women.

Just as she refuses to be categorized as an activist, she refuses to categorize her music as well. The media tries to label her style as folk, blues, Southern rock or some mishmash of the three. Because she always is moving beyond her experiences and experimenting with musical structure, her style develops new overtones with each release. She claims that "I listen to everything," but added that "there's never been anything that I've said, `Wow, that's really incredible' and I want to bring that into my music." She admits she "could stand up on stage and play eight blues songs in a row and have a great time." However, audiences get a musical mixture from all of her releases.

BREAKING ALL THE RULES is an artistically successful album for Davidson because she said "whatever the final product is, is what was in here [her head]. That's when you know you've done your job." She said she is constantly stretching, growing and learning while she writes and performs her unique blend of music.▼

Taylor Dayne Oct. 2

Peabody's Down Under

by Kurt

Staff Music Critic

I'm sitting at home and it's Sunday night and I'm doing laundry and this woman I know calls and says: "Get your butt down here you're on the guest list for Taylor Dayne."

So I throw on my best pretense and fly down to the Flats just in time to see this incredibly clueless man introduce the opening act, which he thinks in Taylor Dayne until this funky back-up singer with dramatic hair tells him otherwise.

I don't know why concert. reviewers talk about opening acts at the end of their reviews. In this case, a local band, "Mr. Sensible" is the opener and we like them, I guess. They have this particular Midwest whitebread funk dance attitude. I become really attached to their song "Smells Like Fish" (take your own guess). The only part I don't care for is this obnoxious young woman who keeps screaming, "Bring out Taylor Dayne." I didn't realize Dayne attracted fans from Parma.

The opener leaves the stage and Mr. Clueless comes back to

announce that Taylor Dayne will be on in about 25 minutes. The sold-out crowd moans in discontent. The crowd is moderately attractive mixed bag of old/young, gay/straight, black/white (note order).

I roam around and meet this intense woman from Power 108 whose favorite phrase is "lie to me" and who confirms that Mr. Clueless is really clueless, and that Taylor Dayne is extremely short and a beast without makeup on.

When Ms. Dayne finally takes the stage I find her to be a cute little pixie with California-blonde hair who has a decent voice (even though she is getting over the flu).

"Prove Your Love" is an absolute jam and the crowd eats it up. "Tell It to My Heart" comes off slightly mechanical, however.

Her backup band is competent, although slightly more rock 'n' roll than I had anticipated. As the drummer and guitarist kick into extensive soloing, I go to the bathroom. Let the woman sing.

Even though Dayne appears quite Madonna-wanna-be-ish, I do believe she has talent, and will receive an allotted 15 minutes of fame provided she can build a strong individual image and make a crossover to commercial radio.
